Haaretz editor-in-chief wins media peace award

Dov Alfon receives prestigious prize from Next Century Foundation in London.

Haaretz’s editor in chief Dov Alfon was awarded the prestigious Next Century Foundation’s “Peace through Media Award” on Saturday evening, in London.

The Next Century Foundation is a charity established in 1989 and devoted to conflict resolution. The annual awards, now in their seventh year, celebrate excellence in Middle East reporting and are awarded to Western, Israeli and Arab journalists recognized for their outstanding coverage of the region.

The awards, according to the foundation, “…pay tribute to the skill, courage and determination of individual journalists when reporting from areas of conflict or political repression.”

The “Peace Through Media,” award is given to a journalist or broadcaster of outstanding caliber, “…selected because their work is of such quality that it has helped to foster a climate of peace and understanding.”

Past winners include Haaretz’s Danny Rubinstein and Akiva Eldar.

Alfon, who started working at Haaretz in 1989 and has served as editor-in-chief since 2008 received the award along with two others -- Daoud Kuttab, a Palestinian journalist who is director of the Institute of Modern Media at Al Quds University, and Donald Macintyre, the Jerusalem correspondent for the British newspaper The Independent.

Journalists receiving other awards at the Saturday ceremony, which took place at the Oxford & Cambridge Club in London, were Jacky Rowland, a correspondent for Al Jazeera English in Jerusalem and Adel Zanoo, a Gaza based stringer.

Linda Menuhin-Abdul Aziz, who writes opinion columns and articles in three languages in the Arab and Israeli press, won the award for Outstanding Contribution to Peace.
