British PM voices hope for peace and stability for Israel

Cameron says British government would do all it can to help Israel seek peace and stability.

British Prime Minister David Cameron has sent Pessah greetings to the Jewish community in Britain and around the world.

“As the festival of Pessah begins, I want to send my very best wishes to Jewish communities in Britain and across the world,” he said in statement on the eve of the festival.

Invoking the story of the festival, and the battle against tyranny for liberation, he said the British government would do all it can to help Israel seek peace and stability.

“As friends and families gather around the Seder table, they remember a story of hope, of the liberation of a people from tyranny. So it falls to today’s generation, inspired by that great struggle for freedom, to forge a path to peace and stability for Israel and the wider region," he said.

“This government will do everything we can to support you in that goal. And we wish you and your family a very happy and peaceful Pessah,” the prime minister said.

British Foreign Secretary William Hague also sent a holiday greeting.

“I am delighted to send my best wishes to the Jewish community in Britain and around the world as celebrations for the festival of Pessah begin,” he said on Monday. “This is a joyous time for Jews around the world as they come together to celebrate liberty and freedom.”

Alluding to recent terrorist attacks on Israeli civilians, Hague said that while Pessah represents the return to the land of Israel for the Jewish people, the search for peace, and a secure Israel, goes on.

“Passover marks the Children of Israel’s release from slavery and the start of their journey to the Promised Land. The sad events of the last few weeks, including the rocket attacks from Gaza and the bomb in Jerusalem, have shown that the search for peace and for freedom from fear is not yet over,” he said.

“So I join with Jews the world over in hoping that the coming year will finally bring about lasting peace, and that it will ensure that Israel is finally truly secure, and at peace.

“I wish you and your family a Hag Herut Sameach,” Hague said.
