MKs' Plan: 'Iron Dome' Protection Within 5 Years

A team made up of members of the Knesset's Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee suggested Wednesday that the IDF purchase 13 Iron Dome systems for rocket interception. The systems would be stationed in southern Israel, where they would protect Jewish communities from rocket attacks by Gaza terrorists.

The plan would be implemented over the course of five years, they said. It would cost Israel an estimated 5.3 billion shekels.

Two systems should be purchased and put into action immediately, committee members suggested. Gaza terrorists have escalated their attacks on civilians in southern Israel in recent weeks.

The team suggested that simply stationing the Iron Dome systems in southern Israel could immediately improve deterrence.

IDF commanders plan to purchase a smaller number of Iron Dome systems, and to spread out the purchase over a longer period of time, than what the MKs suggested.
