Israel to be FĂȘted at World’s Largest Spanish-Language Book Fair, Shimon Peres to Inaugurate Pavilion
Israeli President Shimon Peres will inaugurate the Israeli pavilion at this year’s Guadalajara International Book Fair during his state visit to Mexico at the end of November, Israel’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement Thursday.
Israel was chosen as guest of honor at the event, which is the Spanish-speaking world’s largest book fair, and the world’s second largest behind only Frankfurt’s annual confab.
During the nine days of the book fair, the Israeli delegation will stage some 200 different cultural activities. Israeli Ambassador to Mexico Rodica Radian-Gordon said at a press conference this summer that the delegation will represent the greatest Israeli presence ever at a cultural event abroad.
Israeli writers expected to attend the book fair include Etgar Keret, Shimon Adaf and Eshkol Nevo. Other cultural figures who are expected to attend include Prof. Ada Yonath, Nobel Prize laureate in Chemistry and James Snyder, Israel Museum director.

Julio Iglesias returning to Israel in Nov.
Latin star, who performed in Caesarea in August, to come back for one more gig next month, this time in Tel Aviv’s Charles Bronfman Auditorium
Good news for the romantics among us: Julio Iglesias is returning for another concert in Israel.
The Latin star is scheduled to perform at the Charles Bronfman Auditorium at Tel Aviv’s Habima Square on November 24, just three months after giving two shows at the Caesarea amphitheater.
Iglesias is currently planning one concert in Tel Aviv. A second performance is possible, depending on ticket sales.
The upcoming show is expected to resemble the previous one in terms of the musicians and backup vocalists, as it is still part of the same world tour. This time, however, the concert will not include a guest singer as it did in August, when Iglesias hosted Russian musician Alexander Kogan.
The Israel concert will follow a one-month break the 70-year-old singer plans to take from his performances. After the upcoming visit to Israel, he will move on to two concerts in Azerbaijan. In December he plans to travel east for performances in Indonesia, Hong Kong and Japan.

Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark to Israel’s Peres: ‘I Will Remember this Visit for the Rest of My Life’

On a state visit to Israel, Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark told Israeli President Shimon Peres, who thanked Danes for saving Jews during the Holocaust 70 years ago, that he “will remember this visit for the rest of [his] life.”
“On a personal note, it is fantastic to be in Israel and to visit so far the museum and to witness also the part that tells a positive story during World War II about Danish Jews being shipped and rescued on small boats across from the shores of eastern Denmark to Swedish shores, that was a very bold act of good Danish citizens who came from all walks of life and who did not hesitate to act when it was very necessary,” the crown prince said. “For me this is something personal but today our two countries commemorate this. I will remember this visit for the rest of my life.”
Speaking at the president’s residence, in Jerusalem, Peres said, “Let me express the appreciation of our people and of myself for your timely visit to our land and to Jerusalem. Denmark is an exemplary country in the world, a state based on peace, social justice and caring for people. I believe that’s why you’re admired.”
“I want to express our profound thanks to your people for what they did during the Shoah,” Peres said. “Among all other countries it was Denmark that made a supreme attempt to save the lives of the Jewish people in your country either by hiding them, defending them or shipping them to Sweden. Most of them were saved and we shall never forget it, we consider it a historic act.”

WSJ ‘star-struck’ by Israeli tech scene
Within tiny country, UK tech envoy tells leading US financial daily, ‘you have every major sector and subsector of the technology industry.’ Recent acquisitions of Israeli companies show nation’s lure hasn’t tarnished, newspaper states
Even when you know you’re good, it’s always fun getting compliments. And so it was nice to read the unusual praise showered on Israeli high-tech by the Wall Street Journal, probably the world’s most important financial newspaper.
“Try as you might,” begins the article published under a picture of a flag of Israel, “it is extremely hard not to be a bit star-struck by the Israeli technology scene. Just when you think you have seen everything, along comes something even more impressive, such as a startup with a nanotechnology that has the potential to disrupt everything from batteries to display screens to semiconductors.”
The writer is award-winning journalist Ben Rooney, who covers technology, entrepreneurship and innovation for the Wall Street Journal Europe, from Israel in the south to Scandinavia in the north, from Ireland in the west to Russia in the East.
Rooney, who had a long career in the British Daily Telegraph and was the launch editor of its website, appears on television and in conferences and recently visited Israel.
In his article, Rooney wonders what is next for the startup nation, noting that it is the scale of Israeli ambition that other startup ecosystems outside the US seem incapable of matching.
“It is Silicon Valley for the rest of the world,” he quotes Saul Klein, a London-based venture capitalist and recently appointed a UK tech envoy to Israel, as saying.
Another quote is from Mark Tluszcz, co-founder and chief executive of Mangrove Capital Partners SA, a Luxembourg-based venture firm that has been investing in Israeli startups since 2007: “On a scale of one to 10, the innovation I see in, say, Germany would be close to zero. In Israel, it is a 10.”
“What’s the secret?” the newspaper asks. “Reasons include the role of the Israeli Defense Forces, and in particular the high-tech Unit 8200; the unique cultural values of a country forged from centuries of oppression; and Jewish mothers.”
Yossi Vardi, introduced as “the larger-than-life so-called father of the Israeli tech scene,” favors that last theory. “From birth,” he says, “your mother will tell you that you have to succeed, that you have to be better than your cousin, or her friend’s son, or whoever.”

Israeli Researchers May Have Found the Future of Cancer Research
Israeli researchers believe they have found the cancer research specimen of the future—the Israeli blind mole rat, reports ISRAEL21c.
These wild rodents, no friend to farmers, are extremely resistant to cancer and live 10 times as long as mice, Prof. Aaron Avivi at Haifa University said.
“We claim that defense mechanisms developed along tens of millions of years of evolution must necessarily be a better key to solving cancer — and not the cancer-prone, short-lived inbred rat and mouse that are already laboratory products,” Avivi told ISRAEL21c.
“We truly believe that we have found the potential ‘missing good organism’ that the community of cancer researchers is seeking to progress in our effort to solve cancer in humans.”
ISRAEL21c writes: “Avivi and his colleagues suspect the creatures’ cancer resistance is tied to their ability to survive abrupt and sharp changes in oxygen supply. Hypoxia, a condition caused by a lack of oxygen, leads to human heart and lung diseases, brain strokes and cancer.”
Says Avivi, “The fact that it is tolerant to hypoxia is related to the fact that it is free of ailments as it ages, and we deduce that this is the reason why it survives over 20 years, while rats of the same size and weight survive only four years.”
An article in BMC Biology written by Avivi and his colleagues proved for the first time that it is nearly impossible to induce cancer in the blind mole rat through treatment with carcinogens that cause tumors in mice and rats.
But the coup is that normal cells propagated from the blind mole rat “fight off cancer cells from different tissues and different species, including human. The same cells from control groups of lab mice, rats and wild spiny mice lack this remarkable ability.”
“Our effort now is to try and identify, isolate and purify the substance/s that only the blind mole-rat secretes, and to discover with what component/s it interacts that is active only on cancer cells,” Avivi told ISRAEL21c. “This might lead to a medicine for humans suffering from cancer.”
